Frequently Asked Questions
Shampoo & Product Usage
How long do Tilly and Family shampoo bars last?
Our 70g shampoo bars provide approximately 20-30 washes, depending on the size and coat thickness of the dog. For professional groomers, our 100g bars offer around 30-40 washes under similar conditions.
Are your shampoo bars suitable for all dog breeds and coat types?
Yes, our natural shampoo bars are formulated to be gentle yet effective on all breeds and coat types, including long, short, wiry, and curly-haired dogs.
Can your shampoo bars be used on puppies?
Yes! Our shampoo bars are made with natural ingredients and are safe for puppies over 8 weeks old. However, we always recommend a patch test before first use.
How do I use the shampoo bars effectively on a dog?
- Wet the dog's coat thoroughly, rub the shampoo bar directly to the glove first to lather up, then massage into the coat. Rinse well and repeat if necessary.
- Our shampoo bars are ideal for dog walking for quick patch washing if dogs have mucky paws or roll in fox poo.
- They should be used with lukewarm or warm water, as they still lather up well and can be rinsed off with cold water if necessary, even while on a walk.
Do your shampoo bars help with skin conditions like dandruff or hot spots?
Our bars contain natural oils like coconut and essential oils known for their soothing and antibacterial properties. While they can help with mild irritation, persistent skin conditions should be checked by a vet.
Activated charcoal works best to remove dandruff as it helps remove dead skin and toxins. It may require a couple of washes, but it will help straight away.
Unlike liquid shampoos, our bars do not contain harmful preservatives often found in non-natural pet grooming products. Pets cannot communicate discomfort caused by harsh chemicals, making natural products a safer and more ethical choice.
Can I use the shampoo bars on cats or other animals?
Our shampoos are specifically formulated for dogs. Some essential oils can be harmful to cats, so we do not recommend using them on felines.
My dog doesn’t get washed because of natural oils—will this strip their coat?
No, our natural shampoo bars are gentle and do not strip essential oils from the coat. They can be used even if a dog has a poorly tummy and needs frequent cleaning without irritating their skin.
My dog gets washed in the sea—do they still need shampooing?
Yes! Salt water isn’t great for most coats, as it can cause dryness and irritation. After sea swims, dogs should be shampooed with a natural product to keep their coat and skin healthy.
Do you do Conditioning Bars?
Yes! Whilst all our shampoo bars contain conditioning in them, some days may need a little extra if:
- They have long or curly fur – helps prevent tangles and mats.
- Their coat is dry or brittle – adds moisture and shine.
- They have sensitive or itchy skin – a soothing conditioner can help.
- They get bathed frequently – conditioner replenishes natural oils.
- Their fur is prone to static – conditioner can help reduce frizz.

Product Storage & Maintenance
How should I store the shampoo bars to make them last longer?
Keep the shampoo bars in a dry, well-ventilated area between uses. Using a soap dish with drainage will help prevent them from dissolving too quickly.
What is the shelf life of your shampoo bars?
Our bars last 12-18 months if stored properly in a cool, dry place.
How should I care for and sterilize the exfoliating gloves?
- After Each Use: Rinse the glove thoroughly with warm water to remove soap residue and hair.
- Drying: Hang the glove in a well-ventilated area to air dry completely, preventing bacterial growth.
- Regular Cleaning: Machine wash the glove in warm water with mild detergent weekly or as needed. Avoid using bleach or fabric softeners.
- Sterilization: Periodically soak the glove in a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water for 15 minutes, then rinse and air dry.
How often should I replace the exfoliating gloves?
With regular use, replace them every 3-6 months or when signs of wear appear.
Can I use a shampoo bar on a wet dog multiple times during the same bath?
Yes! Just ensure you rinse thoroughly between applications if needed.
Hygiene & Cleaning for Groomers
How can I naturally disinfect grooming tools like brushes and scissors?
Soak tools in a solution of one part vinegar to three parts water for 10 minutes, rinse, and let them air dry.
How can I clean dog baths naturally?
- Baking Soda Paste: Mix baking soda with water to create a paste. Apply to the bath surface, let sit for 10-15 minutes, then scrub and rinse.
- White Vinegar Spray: Fill a spray bottle with equal parts white vinegar and water. Spray the bath, allow it to sit for a few minutes, then wipe clean and rinse.
- Lemon Juice: For stubborn stains or odors, apply lemon juice directly to the area, let sit briefly, then scrub and rinse.
What’s the best way to naturally remove dog hair buildup from grooming tubs?
White vinegar and warm water work well to loosen hair before rinsing. You can also use a rubber squeegee or dampened rubber glove to lift hair easily.
Are your products antibacterial and antifungal?
Yes, many of our essential oils, such as tea tree, rosemary, and lavender, have natural antibacterial and antifungal properties.
